We were schooled in several aspects of Outback culture. After our hot air balloon ride we were dropped off out in the "bush" to learn about aborigine history, art, and role of the aborigines. A local rancher who works firsthand with the aborigines discussed life in the Outback. He showed us how the aborigines hunt with boomerangs (they aim for an animals legs)....allowing each of us to try and hit a target with a boomerang.
Believe it or not.....Jenesa actually threw it closer to the kangaroo target than I did (beginner's luck!). I still can't believe it!
We were given the opportunity to purchase artwork from the aboriginal people. There was 4-5 aborigines sitting around us with their artwork displayed for sale. Small pieces ran $50 and large pieces $100. The artwork is a series of dots that represent man, woman, water, animals, etc. It all makes for a great story....but I wasn't about to shell out money for artwork.....because we were headed to the SALOON for lunch!
Before leaving, we experienced some Outback foods. First, we nibbled on some nuts and spices that are collected from the trees. Next, we had the chance to eat a grub! Guess how many people did that? I said I would eat it if someone would buy me dinner.....the cheapest meal in town was $35.....so I thought it would be worth it. I was pretty hungry......but I wasn't eating it for free.....especially since it was still alive! Jenesa and I did eat something else! It was our first experience eating KANGAROO. Our guide gave each of us a taste of kangaroo tail. It just seems wrong.....but it tasted good!
